As expressive adj. of these wavering meanings are constantly changed after associated words, it would be wrong, to see in the above varying forms the effect of an IE sound or suffixvariation (cf. Specht Ursprung 260). The ν-formations σιφνός, σιφνεύς, σίφνις can hardly be separated from σίφων (s. v.); however σιφλός and σιπαλός stand apart because of their stem.
